June 30, 2015 - New York City. Submarine Entertainment announced today that it has sold all USA rights minus US TV to James Crump's TROUBLEMAKERS: THE STORY OF LAND ART to First Run Features and has sold all Canadian rights to Films We Like. The deal was negotiated by David Koh of Submarine and Lisa A. Callif of Donaldson + Callif LLP on behalf of the filmmaker & producers along with Marc Mauceri & Seymour Wishman of First Run Features; and Ron Mann of Films We Like Canada. The film will open in theaters later this year with an Academy qualifying run followed by a DVD/VOD/Digital release on the First Run Features label. Films We Like in Canada will release simultaneously with the USA Theatrical release
Troublemakers is a Summitridge Pictures and RSJC LLC Production. Directed, Written & Produced by James Crump. Executive Produced by Ronnie Sassoon. Produced by Farley Ziegler and Michel Comte. Edited by Nick Tamburri. Cinematography by Alex Themistocleous and Robert O'Haire. Sound Design by Gary Gegan and Rick Ash.
Troublemakers unearths the history of land art in the tumultuous late 1960s and early 1970s. The film features a cadre of renegade New York artists that sought to transcend the limitations of painting and sculpture by producing earthworks on a monumental scale in the desolate desert spaces of the American southwest. Today these works remain impressive not only for the sheer audacity of their makers but also for their out-sized ambitions to break free from traditional norms. The film casts these artists in a heroic light, which is exactly how they saw themselves. Iconoclasts who changed the landscape of art forever, these revolutionary, antagonistic creatives risked their careers on radical artistic change and experimentation, and took on the establishment to produce art on their own terms. The film includes rare footage and interviews which unveil the enigmatic lives and careers of storied artists Robert Smithson (Spiral Jetty), Walter De Maria (The Lightning Field) and Michael Heizer (Double Negative); a headstrong troika that established the genre. As the film makes clear, in making works that can never be possessed as an object in a gallery, these troublemakers stand in marked contrast to the hyper-speculative contemporary art world of today.
Troublemakers features Germano Celant, Walter De Maria, Michael Heizer, Dennis Oppenheim, Robert Smithson, Nancy Holt, Vito Acconci, Virginia Dwan, Charles Ross, Paula Cooper, Willoughby Sharp, Pamela Sharp, Lawrence Weiner, Nancy Holt, Carl Andre, Gianfranco Gorgoni, and Harald Szeemann.
James Crump stated, "We are elated to be working with First Run Features on the North American release of Troublemakers. Given First Run Features' long track record of success and total commitment to independent film, we feel this is certain to be a winning collaboration."
Marc Mauceri and Seymour Wishman of First Run Features stated, "Troublemakers delivers a thrillingly cinematic, in-depth look at this most spectacular art form and the artists behind it. All of us at First Run are tremendously excited to be working with James on the American release of his film."
