Description

A Film by Joseph D. Fenton

This documentary, hosted by the distinguished Irish actor Cyril Cusack, examines the life and legacy of Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus and one of the most influential reformers of the Christian Church.

Rarely has any other single group influenced the modern world (secular as well as spiritual) as the Jesuits. Suppressed and dissolved by the Pope in 1773 (which affected 23,000 Jesuits - almost as many as there are today), they were saved by the Empress of Russia, Catherine the Great. The Society of Jesus later became one of the most powerful organizations in the history of Christianity.

Historian Paul Johnson and Jesuits from various countries provide a provocative portrait of the Society and its founder.

Filmed in location in England, France, Italy, Spain and the U.S., the documentary is a visually moving mosaic of the locations and events that influenced the story of Ignatius and his followers from the early years to the present.
